The Company
Corporate Profile
Santista: Brazil's only textile multinational

Santista Têxtil, the first Brazilian multinational in the textile sector, is the country's largest exporter of canvas and denim, selling principally to the United States and within South America. The company is one of the three largest denim producers in the world, and its consolidated foreign sales represent around 50% of its annual sales.

75 Years of Tradition
The company was formed in 1994 from the fusion of two traditional Brazilian textile companies: São Paulo Alpargatas (Textile Division), founded in 1907, and Santista Têxtil, operating since 1929. The company, which is today listed on the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BOVESPA), is controlled by Camargo Corrêa S.A. e São Paulo Alpargatas S.A., both with 50% of the voting shares.

Business Units
Operating with business units focused on Jeanswear, Workwear and Full Package, Santista supplies denim, Vestis® and Color fabrics for the production of women's, men's and children's clothing. Santista is also the Mercosur leader in the workwear market, supplying fabrics for employee uniforms in the industrial, commercial and service sectors and for brand name and retail chain companies with garments produced by third parties under its coordination. Growing ever since its foundation, the company is in constant search of innovation, creating and marketing unique products with high added value.

Modern, strategically located factories
Santista Têxtil produces fabrics in eight factories - six in Brazil, one in Chile and one in Argentina - which employ a total of 5,500 people. In Brazil, the factories are located in Americana, Tatuí and Jaú (state of São Paulo), Paulista (state of Pernambuco) and Nossa Senhora do Socorro and Aracaju (state of Sergipe). The company also has a factory in Chiguayante, (Chile) and another in Tucumán (Argentina). In addition to its factories, Santista has a branch in Maracanaú (Ceará) that serves as a headquarters for the Full Package operation.

In February 2004, Santista reinforced its presence in the Sportswear segment with the acquisition of Jauense - an important producer of cotton and blended (canvas) fabrics.

Cotton
Santista is one of the largest consumers of cotton in Mercosur, responsible for 10% of the regional consumption of the material. Aiming to improve the quality of cottonseeds and of the resulting fiber and fabrics, Santista Têxtil supports research carried out by important institutions, particularly those in the state of Mato Grosso, one of the principal producers of high-quality cotton.

Continuous Investments
In order to obtain positive results and continue its internationalization program, the company has invested in modernization, cost reduction, equipment and expansion into international markets. Between 1994 and 2003, investments in these areas totaled R$ 478 million, guaranteeing the technological upgrade of 85% of the company's equipment.

Certifications guarantee quality and social action
A portion of the investments was also applied toward specific Quality and Environmental Management programs. Through these programs, all eight factories obtained the ISO 9001 certification, and the units installed in Brazil and Argentina received the ISO 14001 certification. In addition, the Paulista unit in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco became the first in the sector in Brazil to use the so-called Integrated Management System. This system possesses the three available certifications: ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and the OHSAS 18001, which ensures compliance with the most rigorous worker health and safety norms. The Socorro unit also possesses the three certifications.

Today, Santista Têxtil is a modern organization that responds quickly and independently to changes and opportunities in the market. It also invests in social responsibility programs such as Action for the Life (Ação pela Vida), which supports primary education and has already benefited some 10,000 children.

Recognition
The company has earned a series of important awards in recognition of its performance and its commitment to the development of the Brazilian textile industry. In 2002, Santista Têxtil was considered the "Most Admired Textile Company in Brazil" for the second consecutive year according to a survey published by the magazine Carta Capital/Interscience. During this same year, the company also won the ABIT Fashion Award promoted by the Brazilian Textile Industry Association. Santista received the award in two categories: Weaving and Export Performance.
